Rugby club “TECH-AS”
Back in 2002, two first-year students Alexei Gavryushenko and Timur Mikhailovich Chapidze came to the dean’s office of the Faculty of Technical Service with a request to help and organize a rugby team at the university. Their arguments were well-founded and seemed quite interesting. Since rugby is a promising student sport widely cultivated in English-speaking countries. Also, they offered as a coach an energetic assistant to the deputy of the regional council, who had experience in coaching the master of sports of the USSR Kordas Valery Mechislavovich. After analyzing the pros and cons in April, it was decided to organize a rugby section and form a team. In May 2002, the first training began. The team included students of the Federal Technical University, senior students of several technical schools, several students of KNURE. Only 18 people. On October 15, 2002, the first official game in rugby-15 with the UIPA team, which was already a participant in the Ukrainian championship, took place on the sports holiday of the vehicle faculty. The game was attended by many university professors and Rector Leonid Nikolaevich Tishchenko – one of the active participants in the development of rugby at the university and its permanent honorary president. The first pancake was a “lump” game then we lost. Although our first distinguished players appeared: Novichenko V. (23TA) made the first skid, and Petrov A. (21TS) made the first realization. The first game was attended by 13 students of the FCS, one student of the FMT and FEASH, as well as three students of GPTU and college.

But we need to go back sometime. Shortly before the first game, the young student team received its name “TECH-AS”, that is, abbreviated – “technical agricultural service”. The idea of the name belongs to the main organizer and inspirer of the rugby development program at the university, the dean of the faculty Naumenko Alexander Artemovich, which was enthusiastically received by the players.
The responsible work of the first coach Valery Kordas and persistent training of students of our university already in 2003 allowed us to declare a team for participation in the first league of the championship of Ukraine on rugby-15.
At the same time, under the auspices of our university, games for the Cup of the Rector of the CDTUSH in rugby-15 among student teams began to be held. A total of four cup draws were held. In the spring of 2003, the HTZ-Olymp team, composed of students from the city of Kharkiv and young CYSS players, won the cup, and in the fall of this year, TECH-AS won its first cup. In 2004 and 2005, the ODABA team from Odessa won the cup. It should be noted that the Cup of the Rector of KhSTUA in the fall of 2003 from the Ukrainian competition moved to the category of international, as in the other draws took part in a team of students RGASM Rostov on Don (Russia).
