Several generations of experienced scientific and pedagogical workers took part in the formation and development of the department, who left their mark on the pages of the history of the department and our university. Highly qualified pedagogical and scientific staff working at the department performed significant methodological and research work on the introduction of advanced scientific achievements in the educational process. On the basis of the department there were regular educational events to improve the skills of teachers of educational institutions and production specialists.

From the first days of its existence, the department pays special attention not only to the fundamental theoretical and special training of future specialists, but also to the development of practical skills, the ability to find optimal methods to improve the performance of tractors and cars in different operating conditions.

There were working the doctors of technical sciences, professors (Diachenko V., Serebriakov I., Sakharevych V., Shoshyn Yu., professor Sandomyrskyi M.), the candidates of technical sciences, associate professors (Antypenko A., Varvarov L., Denysenko A., Zenkevych H., Kolyshkin V., Myronenko H., Nazarenko D., Palahuta V., Statsenko A., Tkachenko D., Associate Professor Vodolazhchenko Yu.), the heads of the laboratories (Popkov I., Lutsenko A.) in different periods. They made a significant contribution to the formation of the department.

In different years the dean’s office of the faculty of mechanization of agriculture was headed by lecturers of the department: Varvarov L., Zenkevych H., Myronenko H., Palahuta V., Tkachenko D.

During the formation and development of the department, the priority of scientific research was the need to improve the design of tractors and engines on the basis of scientifically sound ways to improve their efficiency and reduce the complexity of diagnosis. The industry standards OST 70.2.9-77 and OST 70.2.10-77 (co-author Lebediev A.) developed and implemented at all tractor plants made it possible to obtain the actual economic effect from their implementation only in 1980 in the amount of 3 million 37 thousand rubles.

The priority of scientific research in the field of improvement of diesel fuel equipment is the work of Professor MG Sandomirsky, who worked at the department for 63 years (1954-2017). He performed research on the improvement of diesels and the development of fuel pumps, the results of which are implemented in production with a significant economic effect.

Professor Sandomyrskyi M. prepared 7 candidates of sciences, published 135 scientific works, had 32 inventions, published several textbooks and manuals.

Associate Professor Vodolazhchenko Yu. together with Professor Anylovych V. in 1976 published a guide to the design and calculation of agricultural tractors, which is still in demand among students and specialists in tractor construction.

It should be noted the work of Associate Professor Denysenka A., a student of Professor Dvorovenka H., to improve engine air cleaners. The results of the filter paper research methodology were presented at international scientific conferences, symposia and congresses in Germany (Düsseldorf) at the invitation of the British Filtering Society. His scientific paper on filtration was recommended for the Saila International Prize.

The results of the work of associate professor Tkachenko D. on the improvement of small-sized equipment and development of tractor tires, associate professor Antypenko A. on the development of emergency protection systems for hydraulic drives, introduced into production and remain relevant today.

Associate Professor Statsenko A. and Senior Lecturer Kulakov Yu made a significant contribution to the educational process at the May 1 Training Center. One of the laboratories for studying the design of tractors and cars is named after Associate Professor Statsenko A.

The textbook was published on the structure of the chassis of tractors and cars, the publishing house “Higher School” edited by Professor Lebediev A. in 2004. it is currently the main training for specialists in agricultural higher education institutions.

The most experienced methodologists at the department were Professor Sandomyrskyi M., Professor Varvarov L. A significant contribution to the methodological support of the educational process was made by associate professors: Antypenko A., Antoshchenkov V., Makarenko M., Myronenko H., Poliashenko S., Yesipov O., Shushliapin SV

The staff of the department has developed and implemented in the educational process methodological materials on the organization of credit-module system of the educational process; developed a program in the discipline “Tractors and Cars”, which is recommended by the Ministry of Agriculture for agricultural universities of III-IV levels of accreditation.

For more than 10 years the department “Tractors and cars” together with TD “Avtodvir” according to the subject of advisory service publishes the all-Ukrainian agrarian newspaper “Avtodvir. Assistant Chief Engineer “with a circulation of 32,000 copies, distributed in all regions of Ukraine.

The department has laboratories for internal combustion engines, fuels and lubricants, laboratories for the construction of tractors and cars, hydraulic drives, a computer class, as well as three laboratories for the construction of tractors and cars in the training center. May 1. In addition, the department has a workshop and other educational, scientific and economic premises.

All types of laboratory classes at the department are equipped with laboratory facilities, most of which are operational. The material condition of the department has acquired the current state thanks to the fruitful work of the head of the department prof. Lebediev A., prof. The department is determined to be a leader in the modernization of the educational process in the operational direction of the discipline “Tractors and Cars”. The department has developed methodological manuals recommended for agricultural universities in the country.

The concept of development of tractor construction of Ukraine, developed by leading research institutes with the participation of teachers of the department, was approved. Publication of scientific works on tractor subjects is recommended. The department annually publishes a collection of scientific papers “Tractor energy in crop production”, the only specialized publication in Ukraine.

The department is determined to be a leader in the preparation of textbooks in the discipline “Tractors and Cars”. The department has developed textbooks on the subject “Tractors and Cars”, recommended by the Ministry of Agriculture of Ukraine for the training of specialists in agricultural higher educational institutions.

The concept developed by teachers of the department on modernization of educational process on the basis of electronic textbooks is approved. The department has developed the structure of a multimedia interactive electronic Internet portal to study the structure of tractors and cars (performer – Associate Professor Makarenko M.).

Meeting of the Round Table on the problems of domestic tractor construction with the participation of well-known scientists and specialists and the management of the Kharkiv Tractor Plant. The meeting is opened by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Prof. Lebediev A. (2014).

The adopted decision envisages the creation of a coordination research and production center for tractor construction and machine use at the KNTUA with a training and research laboratory for testing tractors.

The department “Tractors and Cars” following the traditions established since its founding by famous scientists, in the postwar years built its activities in inseparable connection with production, with the design bureaus of leading factories of the tractor industry in Kharkov, as well as with major research institutes in the tractor industry.

The department has a number of technical solutions obtained as a result of research work, which in their completion together with interested companies can find practical application with a significant economic effect. Among these developments are groups of design and technological solutions aimed at improving the technical level of tractors and their operational manufacturability.:

1. Methods and instrumentation for assessing the traction properties of tractors and the resistance of machines that are aggregated with them when performing technological processes.
2. Technical documentation for the manufacture of block-modular energy means of class from 0.6 to 2 kN for small agricultural and personal farms.
3. Power system with electromagnetic injectors for engines with fuel injection and electric ignition. The model of such a system achieved a pressure of 8.5 MPa, which significantly exceeds the parameters achieved in the known systems for similar purposes, resulting in a significant improvement in the quality of fuel spraying.
4. Portable bench equipment for diagnosing electromagnetic gas dispensers and gasoline injectors of engine power systems.
5. Stand and method of accelerated testing of diesel injectors running on biodiesel fuel on the parameters of propensity to coking, which is based on a non-motorized method of data acquisition.
6. System of automatic control of the machine-tractor unit along crops of rows of row crops.

The results of educational and methodical and scientific activities of the staff of the department for the period 1950-2014 are characterized by the following indicators:

• 12 textbooks stamped by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Education of Ukraine were published;
• 127 methodical instructions to laboratory works, course and diploma projects were developed;
• a methodological manual was developed for creating an electronic textbook on the subject “Tractors and Cars”, which is recommended by the Ministry of Agriculture for agricultural universities;
• 23 monographs and 1937 scientific works based on the results of scientific research were published;
• ut were received 178 copyright certificates and patents;
• at the request of agricultural enterprises and dealers for the sale of spare parts issued thousands of copies of more than two dozen manuals for the operation and repair of tractors, which are known in Ukraine and far beyond;
• introduced more than 20 scientific developments of the department to improve the serial production of tractors and engines;
• 11 doctoral and 42 candidate dissertations were defended.

In 2005, the Department of Scientific Policy, Agrarian Education and Science of the Ministry of Agriculture of Ukraine determined the department as exemplary..

Scientific development of the department “Measuring and registration complex for testing mobile machines and their elements”, which was performed jointly with the department “Technologies of machine building and repair of machines” KhNADU – winner of the All-Ukrainian competition “ The best domestic product of 2013».

According to the results of the international competition held by Shell in 2013, Associate Professor Makarenko M. won 1st place, for which he received a diploma of Shell international standard.

New history of the department

This page of the department’s history begins in 2015, when the agricultural sector of Ukraine began to be saturated with tractors of foreign companies John Deere, Case IH and New Hollad, as well as trucks of Kremenchug (KrAZ), Minsk (MAZ) car plants, German companies Mersedes-Benz, MAN and etc. In these conditions, there is a need for highly qualified specialists who can effectively use and maintain modern domestic and foreign equipment, adapting it to the conditions of agricultural production in Ukraine.

The department has carefully studied and predicted the trends of increasing needs for the quality of training and expanding the functional responsibilities of bachelor and master in modern conditions. Due to the elimination of duplication of a number of special disciplines, new disciplines are included in the curriculum: “Theory of operational properties of tractors and cars”, “Intelligent systems of tractors and cars”, “Adaptive control devices of tractors and cars”, “Technical diagnostics of tractors and cars”, “Automotive examination “, etc. The discipline “Methodology of Scientific Research” has been introduced for masters, the practical classes of which are performed with the participation of the employer’s enterprises. These disciplines allow to raise the quality of training to the level of modern needs.

The staff of the department is grateful to the technical worker Sereda N., who for more than 30 years maintains cleanliness and order in the classrooms and premises of the department.

To implement the proposals of employers in the need to improve the practical training of students, the department has allocated an audience, which has been transformed into a training laboratory for the study of the design of components and units of the studied equipment..

The educational process in this laboratory in the specialty “Agroengineering” begins with the second year in the initial study of the design of tractors and cars, their main units, followed by practical work of their disassembly / assembly.

The main contribution to the formation of this laboratory, the development of manuals and technological maps of disassembly / assembly of units of tractors and cars provided a teacher of the department, Ph.D. Koliesnik I.

In 2018, the department opened specialty 274 “Road Transport” to train specialists (bachelor, master) to study the design and technical operation of modern trucks for the agricultural sector of Ukraine. The opening of this specialty at the department is explained by the increased demand of automobile enterprises for specialists who have the necessary knowledge of the design and technical operation of trucks. The high level of teaching is provided by the teaching staff, which includes: three doctors of sciences in the specialty 05.22.02 – Cars and tractors (Lebediev A., Myhal V., Shuliak M.,), two candidates of technical sciences in the specialty 05.22.20 – Operation and repair of vehicles (Bazhynova T., Koliesnik I.).

Opening of a laboratory for studying the design of components and units of tractors and cars in the framework of the opening of a university representative office of the cluster “Agrotechnics” with the participation of the Head of the Kharkiv Regional State Administration Svitlychna Yu.

The main contribution to the organization of licensing of the specialty “Road Transport” (preparation of necessary materials, development of curricula, etc.) was made by Dr. Shuliak M., and the development of textbooks, manuals, training equipment: Professor, Ph.D. Lebediev A., Professor, Ph.D. Myhal V., Associate Professor, Ph.D. Manoilo V., Associate Professor, Ph.D. Yesipov O., Associate Professor, Ph.D. Shevchenko I., assistants, Ph.D. Koliesnik I., Ph.D. Bazhynova T., senior lecturer Kulakov Yu.

The educational process is performed in accordance with the requirements of the educational and qualification characteristics of the bachelor, master of training 27 “Transport”, according to which the student must know the ability to find optimal methods to improve the performance of cars in different operating conditions.

In 2020, the Department’s implementation of the educational and professional program “Road Transport” was positively assessed during the accreditation examination, which allowed to obtain the right from the National Agency for Quality Assurance in Higher Education of Ukraine for another term.

A historic event was the opening of training centers at the department by the leaders of the world tractor industry, American companies Case IH, John Deere, to study the design of tractors of these companies; training of students to work in agricultural companies within Ukraine, which use Case IH and John Deere tractors, as well as retraining of specialists for the right to drive these tractors. The opening of training centers at the department is mainly due to the staff of teachers and developed textbooks on the design of foreign tractors, written by teachers of the department, which are used in the educational process of all agricultural universities in Ukraine.

For two academic years in the direction of implementation of the agreement the department performed the following work:

• нteaching students to study the characteristics of tractor classes and determine the scope of their use in agricultural production, design of Case IN tractors and their maintenance, which is performed by the training center CASE IH Education (USA);
• In order to assist in the training of highly qualified specialists in the field of John Deere and Case IH tractors in the agricultural sector of Ukraine at Ukrfarming LLC and Agristar LLC, which are dealers of John Deere and Case IH companies, a branch of the Department of Tractors and Cars was established (responsible doctor Shulyak ML);
• Agristar LLC specialists gave a course of lectures for teachers and students of the University on the design, technical operation of tractors and self-propelled machines, as well as on precision farming systems in the amount of 27 hours;
• teachers of the department conducted lectures and practical classes with all students majoring in “Agroengineering” on the design of tractors companies Case IN and John Deere;
• Six students who have been trained as tractor operators by these companies have been trained to work at Case IN and John Deere;
• teachers of the department have written and published textbooks on the design of tractors Case IN and John Deere;
• performed research by doctoral students of the Department to ensure high efficiency of use in the agricultural sector of John Deere tractors in transport works (Ph.D. Shuliak M., Ph.D. Kalinin Ye.);
• for students whose training is focused on working in companies, a dual form of education has been introduced, in which 1/3 of professional and practical training is performed at these companies.

In recent years, significantly reformed the educational and methodological work of the department . Only textbooks and manuals written by teachers of the department, 8 were published, 7 monographs were written based on the results of scientific research of the department. This became possible only mainly due to the need to improve the educational process in the direction of improving the quality of training, as well as the generalization of the results of scientific research of teachers, graduate students and doctoral students of the department.

The student design bureau “Special Chassis” is organized at the department. Ph.D., Assistant Koliesnik I. is the chief designer; and Ph.D., Professor Shuliak M. is the supervisor of it.

In this design office, students not only develop new small traction vehicles, but also solve problems with the design of tractors and cars, improving their traction and economic properties. The best works of students annually become winners and prize-winners of All-Ukrainian Student Olympiads and All-Ukrainian competitions of student works.

Three doctoral dissertations (Antoshchenkov R., Shuliak M., Kalinin Ye.) And one candidate’s dissertation (Koliesnik I.) have been defended by doctoral and postgraduate students of the department for the last five years. It is gratifying that all those who defended their dissertations are under 35 years old. The doctoral dissertation of Manoilo V., associate professor of the department on adaptation of internal combustion engines of motor vehicles for work on natural gas, has been prepared for defense. This work to solve the scientific problem and practical significance is relevant for the development of research at the department in this area. Benches and instrumentation for research are available at the department.

It was organized training laboratory in the discipline “Alternative Energy Sources” with the supply of necessary training equipment and repair work to the audience by the company “Company Bioprom”, interested in training specialists in this area. The main contribution to the formation of this laboratory was made by Associate Professor, Ph.D. Yesipov O.

In the State Scientific Institution UkrNDIPVT them. L. Pohorily during tests of new and modernized tractors according to the standard of the Ministry of Agriculture of Ukraine SOU UkrNDIPVT named after L. Pogoriliy 71.2-37-046043090-017: 2015 “Agricultural machinery. Determination of traction parameters of tractors. The method of partial accelerations “(supervisor Dr., Professor Lebedev AT, developer Dr. Shulyak ML) confirmed the effectiveness of reducing the complexity of testing tractors on this SOU. It is planned to implement this JMA in the implementation of scientific research to determine the traction resistance of machines and units used with the tractor, their weight, as well as in assessing the traction and speed properties of the car.

Attaching crucial importance to the development of the department in the need to improve the quality of training of modern specialists, the department organized the educational process on the theory, design and testing of tractors in dual education in the Kharkiv branch of UkrNDIPVT. The working curriculum for this form of education provides theoretical training of students at the department, and the acquisition of practical skills, in particular in tests for compliance with the Technical Regulations for type approval of tractors, is carried out directly at the branch. Teaching students a dual form of education allows them to be in demand in the labor market after graduation.

Doctoral students of the department Shuliak M., Kalinin Ye, graduate student Koliesnik I. actively took part together with students in the research work of the Kharkiv branch of UkrNDIPVT. L. Pogorily on testing of Slobozhanets tractors, transport and technological units of Kobzarenko Plant LLC, diagnosing HTZ-170 series tractors. The result of such cooperation between the Department of “Tractors and Cars” and the Kharkiv branch of UkrNDIPVT. L. Pogorily became an excellent defense of diplomas by students, their successful employment, as well as the defense of doctoral dissertations Shuliak M., Kalinin Ye. and candidate’s dissertation Koliesnik I.

Summarizing the experience of the dual form of education between the department “Tractors and Cars” KhNTUA and Kharkiv branch of UkrNDIPVT named after L. Pogorily outlined areas of joint organizational and methodological support of the practical component of this form of education.

Scientific activity of the department is accompanied by active participation of executors in international and regional scientific conferences (on average 15-20 reports annually), publications of scientific works in professional publications (annually 20-25 publications, including Scopus), participation in regional and international exhibitions dedicated to the results of scientific activities (4-5 exhibits per year), attracting students to perform research on the order of production and management of student research (10-12 per year).

The department organizes a group of vocational guidance for applicants (head – Ph.D., Associate Professor Shevchenko I.), which conducts career guidance work not only in the areas of the region, technical schools of Kharkov, but also directly at the department in training centers John Deere, Case IN with the invitation of teachers and parents of students. The usual question of parents is whether it is possible to enter a training group from foreign tractors? Our answer – of course, you can when entering the specialty “Agroengineering”, with good success at the request of the student, he will be transferred to the training group for tractors John Deere and Case IN with a referral to work after graduation in these companies.

The scientific interests of the teachers of the department are traditionally connected with the improvement of the operational properties of tractors and their engines. With the defense of his doctoral dissertation by associate professor M. Shulyak, the main scientific result of which is aimed at improving the dynamic and energy performance of transport and technological units of variable mass, aroused interest in joint work of enterprises for production and operation of tractors, their adaptation to Ukrainian conditions. The scientific results of the research of the associate professor of the department Manoilo V. on the adaptation of internal combustion engines of motor vehicles for work on natural gas are relevant for the development of research in this area.
