November 10 is World Science Day for Peace and Development, which aims to emphasize the important role of science in society and the need for the general public to participate in the discussion of current scientific issues. The holiday should also emphasize the importance of science for everyday life.
History of the holiday
In 1999, the World Scientific Conference under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was held in Budapest. Conference delegates proposed to establish such a holiday. According to them, this could help strengthen the links between the public and science in solving problems on a global scale.
World Science Day for Peace and Development was officially proclaimed in 2001, and was first celebrated in 2002.
Goals of the Day of Science:
Raise public awareness of the role of science for peaceful and sustainable community development;
Encourage national and international solidarity in the interests of sharing the scientific achievements of different countries;
Restore national and international commitment to the use of science for the benefit of society;
Draw attention to the challenges facing science, as well as increase support for research.
In 2020, the theme of Science Day was Science at the service of society in the fight against the pandemic. As part of the celebration of Science Day this year, a round table will be organized on this topic.
