On November 9, there will be a traditional flash mob of unity around the native language, in which anyone can take part, according to the news page “Osvita. Ua”.
Twenty years ago, Ukrainian Radio launched an annual event dedicated to the Ukrainian language – Radio Dictation of National Unity. The event was first held on May 24, 2000, on the Day of Cyril and Methodius. Later, the traditional date for writing a radio dictation became November 9, the Day of Ukrainian Literature and Language.
The radio dictation is not intended to test the literacy of a particular person but is designed as a kind of flash mob – an action of unity around the native language, in which anyone can take part.
Traditionally, the most active participants in the flash mob are schoolchildren, students, and teachers of educational institutions, but every year the dictation expands the boundaries – it involves representatives of various professions, as well as famous athletes, actors, businessmen, and politicians.
More than 30,000 participants send their dictation results for review every year, but many more Ukrainians around the world take part in it.
The text for the dictation is not selected from the existing ones but is ordered specially, so it cannot be found on the Internet. There are no copyright marks or contradictory spellings in the text, but their total number is very high, so it is not easy to write a radio dictation without errors.
This year, the preparation of the dictation was entrusted to three specialists. The author’s text for the dictation was written by the writer and publisher Ivan Malkovich. Professor Larysa Masenko, Doctor of Philology, became the scientific consultant for the project. Actress Rimma Zubina will read the dictation.
Despite the existence of television broadcasting, dictation remains a radio product: it is recommended to write by ear, listening carefully to the intonations of the announcer.
According to statistics, no more than one percent of participants write a dictation without errors. In 2018, 32,799 participants submitted their works for review. Of these, only 311 did not make any mistakes and made one – 1004.
To successfully write a dictation in 2020, Larysa Masenko, a scientific consultant for Radio Dictation, recommends, first of all, to get acquainted with the new Ukrainian spelling of 2019, as well as with several books and manuals on the Ukrainian language.
Traditionally, the main studio for writing dictation in 2020 was set up in the reading room of the Vernadsky National Library, where famous Ukrainians will write dictation in compliance with quarantine requirements..
The special project “Radio Dictation” will start airing on Ukrainian Radio and Радіо Культура On November 9, 2020 at 9:00, the presenters in the studio will tell the story of the dictation and will allow everyone to prepare for writing. The radio dictation itself will begin at 9:15.
The time to send the finished text is the astronomical age. The original text of the dictation will be published on the website of Ukrainian Radio on November 11, 2020 at 11:00. Entries will be accepted online and offline. The paper letter should be sent to the address: Kyiv, street Khreshchatyk, 26, 01001. You can send your work online to the box rd@ukr.radio.
For convenience, the organizers have also prepared an electronic form for receiving works, so you can send a dictation using any gadget. This electronic form will be posted on ukr.radio on November 9.
All submitted works will be checked by a special professional commission. Authors of works written without errors will receive gifts from project partners, and the results will be announced within 1-2 months, depending on the number of letters received.
The broadcast will take place:
- radio — Ukrainian radio, Radio Culture;
- TV — UA: FIRST, UA: CULTURE and regional public television;
- Internet — YouTube channel of Ukrainian radio and Facebook page UA: Ukrainian Radio.
