A decision was made to open a new specialty in the field of machine building – “Equipment of the forest complex.” The initiators were the university administration and personally the dean of the faculty of technical service prof. O.Naumenko. The first enrollment of students in this specialty took place in 2003, and at the end of 2003 the Department of Forestry Equipment was established. Significant assistance in this was provided by the staff of the Department of Machine Repair and the Department of Mechanization of Livestock Farms under the leadership, respectively, of Professor A. Sidashenko and Professor I. Boyko. Associate Professor S. Ovsyanniikov was appointed the Head of the Department. The first teachers of the department were Doctor of Biological Sciences P. In 2006 the first graduation of specialists and masters in the specialty “Equipment of the forest complex” took place, and in 2008 the training of students in the specialty “Woodworking Technology” began.
In 2006, the department initiated the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiad in the specialty “Equipment of the forest complex.” Over time, the theme of the Olympiad has expanded, and future woodworkers have joined it. By orders of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, KhNTUSG has been repeatedly appointed as a basic institution for the second stage of such competitions.
In 2015, the department was headed by Associate Professor AK Autukhov, and since December 2016 the head of the department is a corresponding member of the Academy of Economic Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Economics, Associate Professor А. Suska.
In 2016, the department began learning students in “Forestry”. The department cooperates with many institutions and enterprises, including the Kharkiv Regional Department of Forestry and Hunting, the Ukrainian Research Institute of Forestry and Agroforestry. AHEM. Vysotsky, LLC “Valley Equipment”, LLC “Center for Woodworking Technologies”, VKF “Lana”, forests of Kharkiv, Sumy and Zhytomyr regions.
In addition to excursions to enterprises, the annual excursions to profile exhibitions, in particular the LISDEREVMASH exhibition (Kyiv), are also extremely informative. In 2017, a trip to the International Industry Exhibition Ligna-2017 (Hanover, Germany) and the Wood-Mizer plant (Kolo, Poland) took place.
Expeditions on wooden house-building and forestry of Prykarpattia and Zakarpattia have already become traditional, during which students have the opportunity to observe the construction of buildings and visit enterprises manufacturing their elements, get acquainted with the typology of Carpathian forests and forestry, admire beautiful landscapes and discover new facets of the original culture of the mountain region.
Numerous foreign connections of the university allow students to do internships and internships in Europe, the USA, Canada and Australia.
The laboratory base of the department is constantly expanding and updating. Currently, it is represented by: the laboratory of furniture design and wooden houses, the laboratory of furniture and joinery, the laboratory of furniture technology, the laboratory of forestry, the laboratory of forest seed production and wood science.
Since 2016, conferences held by the department are held using Internet technologies. During the work of the department more than 10 specialized issues of the Bulletin of KNTUA have been published, devoted to the problems of woodworking and forest complex.
Since 2018, the department is part of the Faculty of Technological Systems and Logistics.
The Department of Woodworking Technologies and System Engineering of the Forest Complex teaches specialists in two specialties: trains specialists in two specialties:

– 205 Forestry.
